1. The Neurochemistry of Addictions:  Our long-term goal is to help generate a map to addictions and the brain

  • DNA factors in the etiology of addictions
  • Shared neurochemistry of addictions and addiction interaction
  • Functional models of relapse prevention based on neurobiological and neurochemical processes
  • Treatment processes which reflect new knowledge of multiple addictions

    2. Sexual Addiction:  Our long-term goal is to establish diagnostic criteria for sexual addiction
  • the etiology of sexual addiction
  • the impact of cybersex
  • the neurochemistry of sexual addiction
  • the relationship of sex addiction and sex offending
  • sex addiction and authority relationships
  • the behavioral constellations of sex addiction
  • the assessment of sex addiction

    3. Family Systems:  Our long-term goal is to understand the role of couples and families in the addiction recovery process
  • the nature of codependency as a diagnostic entity
  • effectiveness of family and couples treatment
  • effectiveness of family and couple education
  • effectiveness of family and couple recovery groups

    4. Trauma and Addiction:  Our long-term goal is to discern how trauma affects addictive disorders
  • coincidence of trauma and addiction
  • impact of trauma on neurobiology/neurochemistry of addictive disorders
  • integration of trauma and addiction treatment

    1. Public education programs related to:

    2. Planning meetings and/or conferences for professionals related to:

  • Prevention of addictive disorders
  • Assessment of addictive disorders
  • Treatment of addictive disorders

    Grant Programs

    The American Foundation for Addiction Research awards educational grants and research grants. The range for an educational grant is $5,000 to $25,000. The range for research grants is $10,000 - $175,000. Grants are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Applicants will be notified in 90 days if they are accepted.

    Grant proposals from both institutions and individuals will be considered. Applications may be submitted by domestic for-profit and non-profit organizations, public and private institutions (such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories), units of state and local government, and eligible agencies of the Federal government. Unsolicited proposals will be accepted. If human subjects are involved in the research project, applicants must be associated with an organization which has a human subjects review committee.
