Research Is the Missing Piece
Every day, clinicians treat people whose lives have been upended by compulsive sexual behavior and addiction, and every day, they run into the same wall: the research has not caught up to the need.
The American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR) exists to close that gap. We fund rigorous, peer-reviewed research that gives clinicians better tools, gives policymakers real evidence, and gives individuals and families a path forward that is grounded in science, not guesswork.
Your donation funds that research.
Why This Matters
Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) affects millions of people, yet it remains underfunded, under-researched, and widely misunderstood. Without a clear diagnostic pathway, treatment stays fragmented. Without data, insurance coverage stays out of reach. Without research, stigma fills the space where science should be.
AFAR was founded to change that.
What Your Gift Funds
Research That Leads to Real Diagnosis
AFAR's research committee is building the case for a formal diagnostic pathway for CSBD, the kind of clinical recognition that opens doors to insurance coverage, standardized treatment, and legitimacy for the people living with this every day.
Studies Grounded in Lived Experience
We design research protocols that listen to the people most affected: those in recovery, their partners, and the clinicians who walk alongside them. Every study starts with the question, what do we actually need to know to help people heal?
A Bridge Between Research and the Public
Peer-reviewed research does no good sitting in a journal no one reads. AFAR translates rigorous science into resources that clinicians, families, and individuals can actually use.

A Note From the Research Committee
We do not do this work because it is easy. We do it because there are people right now who cannot get a diagnosis that fits what they are living through, clinicians who cannot get insurance to cover the treatment they know works, and families who are told to just try harder when what they actually need is science on their side.
Research is slow. It is also the only thing that lasts. Every study AFAR funds becomes part of the foundation for a future where compulsive sexual behavior is understood, diagnosed, and treated the way it deserves to be.
Thank you for being part of building that future.
FAQs
Is my donation tax-deductible?
How is AFAR different from other addiction organizations?
Yes. AFAR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Our EIN is 86-0946851, and you’ll receive an email receipt for your records.
Many organizations in this space provide treatment or peer support. AFAR works on the evidence underneath it: we fund peer-reviewed research on compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and push for its formal clinical recognition, the step that opens the door to standardized care and insurance coverage.
Can I give monthly?
Yes, and it’s one of the most helpful ways to give. Research takes years, and steady monthly support lets AFAR commit to long-term studies with confidence. Just select Monthly in the donation form below. You can change or cancel anytime by emailing info@addictionresearch.com.
Is my information kept private?
Yes. We know this cause is personal for many supporters. AFAR never sells or shares donor information, and you can give anonymously on request. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Are there other ways to give?
Yes. Beyond online gifts, AFAR welcomes gifts in honor or memory of someone, employer matching gifts, donor-advised fund grants, and gifts of stock. To talk through options, contact us at info@addictionresearch.com.
Can I get involved without donating?
Absolutely. Attend one of our events, join the AFAR Coalition, or share our work with a clinician or family who needs it. You’ll find Events and Coalition under Get Involved in the menu above.
Where can I read AFAR-funded research?
Browse studies we’ve funded, with plain-language summaries, on our AFAR-funded research page.
