Bethany Nelson, PhD
Leading AFAR's Mission to
Bridge Research and Real-World Impact
Dr. Bethany Nelson serves as Executive Director of the American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR), where she leads the organization's efforts to advance research, education, advocacy, and collaboration related to sex and pornography addiction, compulsive sexual behaviors, and betrayal trauma.
With a background in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, communications, and organizational development, Bethany is passionate about bridging the gap between research and real-world impact. She works closely with researchers, clinicians, treatment providers, and community leaders to expand AFAR's programs, strengthen partnerships, and increase public understanding of behavioral addictions and their effects on individuals, partners, and families.
Under her leadership, AFAR has expanded initiatives including the Summit Group, Healers Circle, Restoration Circle, and the Coalition of Sex & Porn Addiction Treatment Centers while developing new opportunities to make research more accessible to clinicians and the public.
Bethany holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and has spent her career leading mission-driven organizations through periods of growth and transformation. She believes lasting change happens when science, education, and compassionate leadership come together to improve lives.
Outside of her work, Bethany enjoys writing, traveling, and exploring ways to connect people through meaningful conversation and shared purpose.
