The American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR) exists to close that gap. We fund rigorous, peer-reviewed research that gives clinicians better tools, gives policymakers real evidence, and gives individuals and families a path forward that is grounded in science, not guesswork.

A Note From the Research Committee
We do not do this work because it is easy. We do it because there are people right now who cannot get a diagnosis that fits what they are living through, clinicians who cannot get insurance to cover the treatment they know works, and families who are told to just try harder when what they actually need is science on their side.
Research is slow. It is also the only thing that lasts. Every study AFAR funds becomes part of the foundation for a future where compulsive sexual behavior is understood, diagnosed, and treated the way it deserves to be.
