Building a Stronger Voice for the Field
One of AFAR’s priorities this year has been bringing together the people and organizations working every day with sex addiction, problematic pornography use, compulsive sexual behavior, and the people affected by them.
That work is taking shape through the Coalition of Sex & Porn Addiction Treatment Centers.
The Coalition will create a place for treatment centers, clinicians, researchers, and other leaders in the field to work together on issues that are difficult for any one organization to address alone.
Among the most important is the continued lack of clear diagnostic recognition for sex and pornography addiction. That uncertainty affects much more than terminology. It has implications for research, insurance coverage, treatment access, clinical consistency, and how seriously people experiencing these behaviors are understood.
Through regular meetings, Coalition participants will work together around research, clinical language and standards, treatment practices, policy and advocacy, and the broader public understanding of these issues.
AFAR has already begun building relationships with organizations and clinicians interested in this work. Now we want to continue expanding the group and bringing more voices to the table.
